Review the Evidence: Running Injuries and Plantar Fasciitis

This past week we had some great infographics put out by Tom Goon, a physiotherapist specializing in running (@tomgoon) that highlighted the necessary information on how injuries in running occur as well as plantar fasciitis specifically.

They are fairly self-explanatory, but the main takeaways are:

  • Runners need to be strong enough to handle their desired volume.
  • The running program should only be stopped when the acute pain is at the bone or the tendon attachment.
  • If you're still in pain 24 hours after your last run, reduce volume
  • Plantar fasciitis does better when it is treated, but can still take anywhere from 3-6 months (sometimes longer)
  • Other factors, such as hamstring length, may be a factor in developing plantar fasciitis
    • (Which is why I always treat the entire leg when dealing with plantar fasciitis)

Some good stuff from these guys.  Make sure to follow them - and me - on twitter @ekncdc for any new updates to research and general well-being!
